چکیده

[1] We observe a net loss of 3.2 (±1.1) 10 J of heat from the upper ocean between 2003 and 2005. Using a broad array of in situ ocean measurements, we present annual estimates of global upper-ocean heat content anomaly from 1993 through 2005. Including the recent downturn, the average warming rate for the entire 13-year period is 0.33 ± 0.23 W/m (of the Earth’s total surface area). A new estimate of sampling error in the heat content record suggests that both the recent and previous global cooling events are significant and unlikely to be artifacts of inadequate ocean sampling. Observations and Analyses of Upper Ocean Responses to Tropical Storms and Hurricanes in the Vicinity of Bermuda

The interaction between the atmosphere and ocean is of fundamental importance for understanding the dynamics and thermodynamics of the atmosphere and the ocean. Understanding of the upper ocean response to intense wind forcing has been limited by the paucity of direct observations. A circular region within a radius of 400 km of Bermuda has been struck by 188 tropical storms or hurricanes from 1...

Interpretation of tropical thermocline cooling in the Indian and Pacific oceans during recent decades

[1] A warming trend has been detected in the world’s oceans in recent decades. The basin-averaged warming, however, shows a complex vertical structure in the Indian and Pacific oceans. Warming in the upper ocean-with maxima near the surfaceaccompanies a strong cooling in the upper thermocline. Analysis of observed data and model solutions from this study reveals that the complex structure is co...

Distinctive climate signals in reanalysis of global ocean heat content

[1] The elusive nature of the post-2004 upper ocean warming has exposed uncertainties in the ocean’s role in the Earth’s energy budget and transient climate sensitivity. Here we present the time evolution of the global ocean heat content for 1958 through 2009 from a new observationbased reanalysis of the ocean. Volcanic eruptions and El Niño events are identified as sharp cooling events punctua...

6a.4 Impact of a Warm Ocean Eddy’s Circulation on Hurricane-induced Sea Surface Cooling with Implications for Hurricane Intensity

Evaporation from the sea surface, primarily within a hurricane’s core, provides the heat energy required to intensify and maintain the storm (e.g. Cione and Uhlhorn 2003, Emanuel 2003, and references therein). If the sea surface temperature (SST) decreases within the storm core, so does the heat energy available to the storm. Generally, in the deep ocean, SST cooling within the storm core occur...

Implications of the recent trend in the Arctic/North Atlantic Oscillation for the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation

Most projections of greenhouse gas-induced climate change indicate a weakening of the thermohaline circulation (THC) in the North Atlantic in response to increased freshening and warming in the subpolar region. These changes reduce high latitude upper ocean density, and therefore weaken the THC. Using ensembles of numerical experiments with a coupled ocean-atmosphere model, it is found that thi...
